Territorial damselflies are larger and show negative allometry in their genitalia

چکیده

Abstract The ‘functional allometry’ hypothesis proposes that the variation in allometric patterns of sexually selected traits is related to their function. We hypothesize for genitalia aggressively territorial organisms are different from those non-territorial and predict species, where body size directly reproductive success, males must allocate more resources than genitalia. studied 59 species damselflies 51 genera. Species were divided into three categories: highly aggressive; low not aggressive. measured length genital ligula, width at basis its maximum width, we used wing as descriptors size. slope relationships was estimated using ordinary least squares reduced major axis regressions. Our results indicated first, larger equivalent estimators odonates. Second, regressions provided some analyses. Third, found aggressive have less steep slopes non-aggressive both ligula basis.

Static allometry and animal genitalia.

A survey of 117 species of arthropods and 17 species of vertebrates showed a strong trend for male genitalia to have relatively low static allometric values. This trend contrasts with the allometry of other structures under sexual selection, which usually show steep allometric slopes. The trend to low allometric genital values is less consistent in mammals than in arthropods. Data not in accord...

Multiple routes to reduced interspecific territorial fighting in Hetaerina damselflies

Interspecific territoriality may be adaptive if territories contain depletable resources that are valuable to both species, but it can also arise as a maladaptive by-product of intraspecific territoriality. In the latter scenario, sympatric species ought to diverge in ways that reduce interspecific fighting. We studied 4 Hetaerina damselfly species that can be found in sympatry in North America...

CD4+ T Cells are Exhausted and Show Functional Defects in Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia

Background: Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is the most common adult leukemia in the western world. This health problem is caused due to the accumulation of mature B-lymphocytes in the peripheral blood and bone marrow. In the course of cancer, CD4+ T cells become “exhausted” and characterized with poor effector functions and the expression of multiple inhibitory receptors. Objective: To inve...
